Playing games to increase brain function

Every day is a good day to boost your brainpower! A recent Prevention article by Tracy Miller suggested five great ways to test and tone your brain.

1. Play a board game. Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly and Scrabble all encourage your neurons to work, says clinical neuropsychologist, Paul Nussbaum, PhD.

2. Travel. "When you travel to a different place, it's going to be a new and complex environment for you," says Dr. Nussbaum. That is mentally stimulating.

3. Eat for your brain. Nuts, poultry, fish, low-fat dairy, tomatoes and cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli and cabbage) fight inflammation that's been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease.

4. Challenge yourself. Write down family memories in detail, learn a new skill or take a class.

5. Socialize! Mental stimulation comes from sharing stories, listening to others, participating in group activities, and working together to solve problems.
