A common misconception still persists that eating “right” is expensive and inconvenient. But that’s simply not true! Aside from regular exercise, your diet impacts your overall health more than any other factor, and eating healthy can be easy.

March is National Nutrition Month, and we’d like to encourage our community members to build their healthiest plate at every meal, and to make a commitment to nutrition. Below are some helpful tips to get started in a healthier direction. You’ll be amazed at the difference just a few changes can make!

Better Choices
Choose a variety of vegetables, focusing mainly on dark green, red and orange veggies. Stir-frys or salads are always good options, and while fresh or frozen vegetables are best, canned are a good alternative, too. However, be careful to choose “no sodium added,” or “low sodium” if you opt for canned veggies.
If you’re over the age of 55, you also require more calcium and vitamin D in your diet to maintain bone health. Opt for three servings of low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese or yogurt a day.

Portion Control
Most adults over the age of 55 require fewer calories, so avoid oversized portions. Using a smaller bowl, plate or glass can help with this. If you’re eating out, read the menu carefully, and choose items that include vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Share a meal if the portions are large, or take some home for later.

Sodium, Sugar, and Fat
Many people aren’t aware of the high amounts of salt and sugars that are in prepackaged or prepared foods. Take the time to read labels, or request nutrition facts whenever possible. You’ll be amazed at the amount of sodium and sugar in items that you eat every day. Avoid sugary juices or sodas as well, and opt for water instead.
