Senior living

The search for a nursing home is an event that usually only happens once for most people. Because it’s such a rare event, many don’t know what to look for as they tour a facility.
At Embassy Healthcare, we understand this. That’s why we’ve put together this list of items you should consider and ask about during your tour. These items will help you make the right decision for you and your family.

Consider location

Is the nursing home close enough for family and friends to visit frequently? Studies have shown that patients with more visitors tend to do better in nursing homes.

Talk to the residents

Ask current residents what they like and don’t like about the community. This will give you a good insight into the everyday happenings.

Talk to the staff

Do they seem friendly? Can they answer your questions? If not, they may be unable to provide the level of care you’re looking for.

Look for cleanliness

Look for dirty windows, baseboards and corners. Also, ask how often bedrooms and bathrooms are cleaned and inspected. You should also ask about laundry and ask about any odors you notice.

Taste the food

You or your loved one is going to be eating every meal at the community you choose, so make sure it tastes good. Make sure they can accommodate dietary restrictions as well.

Make an unscheduled stop outside of peak hours

Visiting on the weekend or in the evening is the perfect opportunity to see what goes on at a community when there may be less staff. This also gives you more insight about the level of care that’s provided.

Take a second tour

If you were impressed with the first tour, schedule a second one to make sure you didn’t miss anything. You may be surprised what slipped past you during your initial tour.
